Today is National Burger Day. I am sure Burger King and the ol’ golden triangle guys are loving it. But something a little more classy and up-market for us plus something you cannot get in McDonalds, a decent bottle of wine.

A warmed ciabatta roll, a dollop of Stokes Mayo, a Muddy Boots Classic Quarter Pounder fried to perfection if I may so, a slice of Westcombe Mature Cheddar (Flavour Strength 5) melted to unctuous gloriousness, a scattering of Steve’s Leaves and, on the side, a handful of Isle of Wight Heirloom tomatoes. It doesn’t get any better. Also on the side a bottle of stonkingly brilliant, in a full-on Aussie way, Wirra Wirra Church Block 2012. This is a blend of Cabernet, Shiraz and Merlot. I love it. Buy from Waitrose, Ocado, Tesco and The Drink Shop.com for £13.49. A burger just isn’t right without a big container of fries. These are Waitrose Value Oven Chips – £1 for a huge bag full.

Enjoy National Burger Day. Who thinks these things up?

A glorious Australian red – just perfect with a simple, but posh burger, for National Burger Day
