The inaugural Argentina Wine Awards were held on the 19th – 22nd February 2007 at Mendoza’s Park Hyatt Hotel. Of the 446 wines that were entered the tasting produced 9 Trophies, 24 Gold Medals, 145 Silver Medals and 199 Bronze medals.

All the wines were double blind tasted by a panel of twelve judges, eight from the UK and four from Argentina. The Golds were retasted to decide on the Trophies. The only information known to the judges was price band (above or below £10) and grape variety. Time for another look at the wines of Argentina perhaps?

Overall the wines were much more sophisticated than they had been on my last visit in 2002, said one of the eight UK judges, Jancis Robinson MW. “There were fewer really overripe, over-alcoholic wines than I was expecting.”
