Bacchus, here resplendent with bulbous red nose and bushy red beard, as painted on the side of a wine barrel. Chateau Haut Sarpe, deep in the heart of Bordeaux, has a out-building converted to a bar used, I believe, for grape pickers and other staff during harvest. It is a totally mad building chocked full of ‘stuff’. Seemingly covering every inch of wall space are advertising posters, tacky photos, there is a row of stripy ties, a vast array of hats, a checked trousered puppet, beer ephemera and empty bottles of Moet. Outside is this barrel, hand-painted with Bacchus taking a bath in wine while drinking the contents.
