Churchills Sense the Taste

innovation and art comes to wine tasting

By In Videos
Can art – in the form of sound and cinematic vision – be combined with wine? Can such audio-visuals allow audiences to “taste” wine without actually, physically, tasting it?

Sense The Taste is a project that combines science, music and technology to bring a selection of Churchill’s ports to life using cymatics: The study of sound vibrations. In these three videos soundtracks and scenes mix with patterns that reflect Churchill’s Dry White, 10 Year Old Tawny and Late Bottled Vintage. The opening video is equally as fascinating, showing a little background to the concept.

Using cymatics, the study of visual sound vibration, we explored different patterns and symmetries and how these correlate to sound and taste. Different frequencies and vibrations were mapped to different tastes and served as inspiration for the musical compositions.

To execute the project a prototype using a tone generator and a speaker filled with Churchill’s port wine was created. The result was an art and science project allowing viewers to see, hear, feel and ultimately sense the taste.

I am really enjoying seeing how we can integrate so many different media types together. It’s exciting to say the least.
