On the one hand the EU's ruling concerning cross-border duty rates on internet purchases hurts the consumer; but then the myriad of independent merchants that comprise the UK's flourishing wine sector would have suffered immensely. The government would have just slapped taxes somewhere else to cover any income shortfall anyway...
