Spittoon: We Spit So You Can Swallow
Not been to Munich before so the anticipation of exploring somewhere new, even if for just a few hours, was immense. A flight to the airport, a U-Bahn to leave the luggage at Hauptbanhof (a train journey to Vienna for the EWBC was later) and then a few hours to wander the streets. For refreshment – it had after all been a tiring flight lasting a whole two hours – a beer was called for. What else do you do in Munich??Straight out of the station, across Karlsplatz and on down the Neuhauserstrasse. On the right you will find the Augustinerbraü – the shell-lined room, the Muschelsall, we missed but our table tucked down the back laid down the atmosphere aplenty. Mightily tempted to eat here, we settled on a beer and a near perfect pretzel (the former I forget the price of but the pretzel was 90c) . For us an Augustiner Weissbier hit the mark.
Once consumed the wander through Munich continued – the Viktualienmarkt, a superb wine shop which I stupidly neglected to write down the name (or address) of, Marienplatz and the Neues Rathaus, the gourmet-heaven of Alois Dallmayr (good wine selection here too) and pork roast and another beer at Weisses Bräuhaus… a bit confused over the differences of beer styles here – the one in the photograph is Tap 4, lighter than the earlier Weissbier but fine enough to wash down the roast pork and herby dumpling. Was I stuffed after!

Excellent job for someone who’d never been to Munich before! Weisses is one of the best! My only other suggestion would have been to go to the Augustiner directly BEHIND the Hbhf. It’s got a great beer garden. (Not sure what the weather was like though.) Love love love Munich. One of my favorite cities. Lived there for 6 months in 2003.
On the return to the station we did walk through the Alter Botanischer Garten; the beer garden there didnt look open sadly. Would that have been the one?
I am dreaming of those pretzels. The beer was about 3 euros more or less…
