Who would realise under a small pop-up shop just a short walk from Holborn station were labyrinthine halls substantial enough to host a large consumer wine fair. At street level the hottest day of the year; three stairwells down welcome cool and a mass of wine – this being the latest Oddbins wine fair.

Highlights? The Chateau de l’Engarran, Grés de Montpellier 2009, Coteaux du Langudeoc, a stonker of a southern French red blend (£13.50) and the funkily labelled Chilean Secret range from Chile especially the Viognier (£11. 85% Viognier, 15% Secret? Although my guess is Sauvignon). The labels designed by famed local artist Catalina Abbot.

From New Zealand the Tupari range, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Gris, charmed with pure fruit intensity and a palate as stylish as the labelling (Tupari Sauvignon only online at £15.25); the Pinot Gris especially. Very small production with Oddbins taking the small UK allocation.

From Spain the Pazo do Mar range especially the Godello and red Mencia were little beauts; the red, of which more anon, served lightly chilled was deliciously light and tannin-soft. Great value too as was the Stonerock Sauvignon Blanc, with a richness that put it miles away from its Bordeaux homeland. Finally the De Martino range, also from Chile, was impressive – all organically grown grapes and softness of touch. The two field blends on show, especially the Alto Los Toros was very impressive.

A special Sunday Wine Shot celebrating the Oddbins wine fair with not one but eight photographs taken yesterday.
