The bible for Spanish wine lovers is the Jose Penin guide. The latest version is about to be released in English.
For over 25 years Jose Penin has written about the wines and wine growers of Spain and in 1980 created Spain's first wine magazine Bouquet. As a freelance author today he works for prominent Spanish media such as "El Pais" and "Tiempo", as well as many culinary magazines. In 1990 he published "Guia Penin de los vinos de Espana" which has become the market leader in its field. His totally independent and honest opinions have decided the success or failure of the wines he tastes and year in year out the sommeliers world-wide check his views and criticisms.

The guide covers over 6000 wines from 2600 wineries. Amazon.co.uk have the book on pre-release price of £20. I have found previous issues of the guide invaluable.

I have put together a Top 5 Spanish Retailers list over on UKWinesOnline.

I agree that for Spanish wines, the Peñin guide is one of the leading guides we have, but I'm not sure that this is a Bible. I guess, as it happens too with the largest guides (more than 6000 wines tasted!), that of El País for instance, that they have written about too many wines to be careful and really precise with their oppinions. Nontheless it's an excellent vademecum to have a first good information.
Cheers!
Joan
