Vom Fass is probably the most well-known pervayor of wine, spirits and oils direct from barrels. Their franchise operation continues its sedate expansion with a new store opening in Nottingham. But the concept of selling direct from barrel has largely been restricted to small production ales until now.

A new company, Refrigerated Wine Barrels, has developed a steel barrel inside an oak cask which is connected to the mains to keep cool. They have been tested by Borough Wines in London who has been using the barrels to sell wine from the owners Bergerac vineyard. Will these barrels become as familiar in the local wine store as bag-in-box wines or a rapid chill machine?
