I hear that the Rathfinny Estate in East Sussex, is about to engage in another round of planting. Specifically 85,000 vines will be added to the 600 acre estate in April. The winery will eventually produce around 1 million bottles of sparkling wine a year. They have also just released a new concept video that gives a grand overview of the multi-million pound winery with its sustainable design techniques and the use of innovative low carbon technologies. No voice over explaining the specifics, but you get the ‘vision’. None of these features were built during my visit to the Rathfinny Estate last March.

Opening with the ‘basic’ wines he was almost apologetic at their simplicity. Personally I found them a delight; no idea of price at the time (the top of the range comes in at a very reasonable €20 cellar door) but to a bottle these ‘lesser’ wines were lovely, offering a balanced richness, a true regional acidic streak in the RI.VA.LE Chianti and a touch riper, softer palate to the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
