Welcome to the second annual #Chardonnay day. With your help, this (along with #Cabernet day) could become annual holidays born from social media. All you have to do to participate is get some Chardonnay in your glass on May 26th. My choice, rather dictated by what is available at the local supermarket, is this fine fillie is Vincent de Vignaud Pouilly-Vinzelles, 2007, a white Burgundy. [Adegga / Snooth]. The rear label is interesting for they have emblazoned the grape vareity,in a wonton hussy type manner, across the label. For those who don’t know that a PV or a white Burgundy is made from the worlds most famous grape. (Not too dissimilar from the Osma watches the IT Crowd, Chardonnay as the worlds most famous grape may be a made up ‘fact'; perhaps Pinot Grigio is more ‘known’?) .
To accompany the simple dinner of herby, lemony, roast chicken this was near spot-on. Nice weight, smooth as Osmas’s bold-patch, with a deft layering of citrus, peachy fruit coupled with an edge of creaminess. The fact it is currently on offer (25% off at £10.49) at Waitrose also shines in its favour.
This particular wine is made form grapes grown by a group of five growers in the village of Pouilly-Vinzelles that lies just to the South East of Pouilly-Fuissé. A wine of similar style too but I’m buggered if I can detect any difference.
A bottle of Vermentino was opened in ‘celebration’. Interesting in that this is a southern French bottle – where the grape is usually down as Rolle; but here it is in all its bright citrus crispness and Italianesque splendor – L’Atelier Miguel Vermentino, 2010, Vin de Pays d’Oc. [Adegga / Snooth] Available from Waitrose for £7.49.
