Sintica Winery Barrel Room

By In Bulgaria Travels, Photographs
On the southern edge of Sandanski, within walking distance of the town centre, lies Sintica winery. Another of those Bulgarian post-communism success stories, heaps of awards for their wines, and grand plans to open a hotel in the grounds and embrace the whole wine-tourism arena. The wineries grounds host many rare and exotic plants including Ginkobiloba, Parnar, olives, cypresses, palms, citrus trees, Persimmon and others.

As with many the winery burrows deep underground with cavernous rooms designed to hold barrels aplenty. This weeks Sunday Wine Shot shows one such room.

From the previous winery the only thing preserved is the unique underground cellar for storage and aging of wines, with a constant natural temperature of 14 º C and natural ventilation of air. It has a capacity of eight hundred casks of the type “barriques” and in its walls there is a built-in niche for maturation of wines in bottles. The winery is built with the participation of leading Bulgarian and Italian designers and companies. It is a completely new and modern complex with a growing capacity for about 500 000 litres of wine. Sintica Winery
