It is one of my bug-bears; when visiting a winery for a tour they invariably love to show off their stainless steel tanks. Frankly once you’ve seen one such tank you’ve seen them all. OK, a visit might be enlivened with a little tasting from one of the tanks but what I really want is to get out into the vineyard! After all one oft repeated mantra is that the “wine is made in the vineyard” and not in the winery… in which case show me the bloody vineyard!

Still, sometimes a stainless steel tank can make for a decent photo (such as these giant beasties headlining my report on visiting Raimat in Spain) or todays Sunday Snapshot, a black and white image of tanks at Villa Russiz, Fruili, Italy (visited as part of the post European Wine Bloggers Conference last October).

Stainless Steel Tanks at Villa Russiz, Fruili, Italy

  1. LOL yes, they want to show off their modernity, we want ancient oak barrels covered in cobwebs ;o) Far more picturesque! Lovely shot though – I think I have a similar one filed away of Dos Grous winery in Portugal… Must dig it out!

  2. Nice picture! I prefer to capture wooden vats, the tone, the ordered placement, the warmth of the wood color… Stainless stell tanks are just to industrial!

Wine Tasting Tuscan Style

Opening with the ‘basic’ wines he was almost apologetic at their simplicity. Personally I found them a delight; no idea of price at the time (the top of the range comes in at a very reasonable €20 cellar door) but to a bottle these ‘lesser’ wines were lovely, offering a balanced richness, a true regional acidic streak in the RI.VA.LE Chianti and a touch riper, softer palate to the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
