Table Grapes at Villa Melnik

By In Photographs
A simple photograph for this weeks Sunday Wine Shot – a bunch of table grapes at Villa Melnik, Bulgaria. Its a fine, rather remote spot, near to the border with Greece with the vineyards spread out in front of the winery building. On the hills behind are the remnants of vineyards grubbed up at the end of the Communist era when a sudden drop in demand from Russia for Bulgarian wine made them redundant.

The estate grows a wide range of different grapes – the local varieties and the international – plus, as pictured, a few rows of table grapes. They were, one has to admit, some of the sweetest and juiciest grapes I have tried, straight of the vine as they were.
