One of the most recognisable names and also one of the oldest wine families in Alsace is Hugel. Under the winery, improbably positioned in the heart of Riquewihr (just how 'do' they get the grapes into the winery?) is this imposing beast of a barrel.

Certified by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's oldest vat in constant use, it is still utilised to this day.

wow that's awesome. Glad to know about the world oldest wine barrel. Nice information. Nice blog to0.

That's so neat. What an interesting piece of history for them to have in hand, and not to mention, in use. Thanks for the photograph.

Thanks for posting this, is really interesting. The barrel, beside being the oldest ranks also among the most beautiful wine barrels.

Several of the older, nmore tradition-led, wineries have similar barrels. Many are at least a hndred years old and come complete with intircate carvings.

Being so old, of course, means that any wine stored in them does not receive any wood influence at all.

You see, wine leads to a longer life... Liking your pictures so far, by the way.

wow I am a wine maniac :)) in my little house me and my husband have wine-vault with all kinds of wine :)) I want to taste this wine it's gonna be a perfect one :))
