Continuing the round-up of a lively tasting held in Spain of wines from Cigales. [Part One].
Red WineWine Tasting Note: Bodegas Hiljos de Marcos Gómez Salvueros Tinto Roble, 2005, Cigales, Spain.
Made with 100% Tempranillo sourced from a selection of vines ranging from 50 to around 80 years old. Pedro Martin, the oenologist, stressed they were aiming for a fresh and fruit angle. This is evident in the aroma which was distinctively younger with more primary fruit than other samples. An excellent wine all the same with excellent concentration and good definition.

Rose WineWine Tasting Note: Torondos Rosado, 2006, Cigales, Spain.
Made from a mix of red grapes (Tempranillo and Grenacha making up 60%) and white grapes (Verdejo and Albillo) made by the Cigales Cooperative. Pale pink in colour. Young, fruity, strawberry with a light cherry edge. Light. Dry. fresh, crisply clean on the finish.

Bodega La Legua CaprichoRed WineWine Tasting Note: Bodega La Legua Capricho, 2003, Cigales, Spain.
Available for £30 from Dulcinea Wines.
With 7 years working for the company Adolfo González Lázaro has worked wonders on this 100% Tempranillo, La Legua’s flagship wine. Production is small at just 1,500 bottles. A superb nose, concentrated yet refined, pure Tempranillo fruit melded with oak. A seductive, smooth palate, with a concentrated burst of tannins on the finish. Lovely strawberry fruit married with an excellent spiciness and good complexity. Superb.

Adolfo González Lázaro, is one of the youngest and most promising winemakers in Castilla. He is conscious of the fact that a good wine begins with the care given to the vine and that to obtain the best results in the bottle, in-depth knowledge is required together with a detailed study of the different soils and characteristics of each of the plots on the estate.
The Finca de la Legua Estate has different grape varieties. The Tempranillo variety, also known locally as Tinta Fina, takes up a surface area of 80 ha; 5 ha are given to the Garnacha variety and another 5 ha to the variety of Cabernet Sauvignon.”
