The following morning, as I staggered bleary-eyed through the hotel tour, the manager with hand around my shoulders inquired how I had managed to get out of the hotel so early in the morning. I looked at him quizzically and said I just let myself out of the first door I came to. He looked at me oddly – as if I had committed a minor sin, and said he had locked all the doors last night and was rather amazed I had ‘escaped’.

In fact to get this photo I had set the alarm for 4:30 and then hit snooze a couple of times before realising the photographic potential that lay just outside my window. A fruitless search for some staff to make me a coffee and I was out the breakfast room door. If I hadn’t found an unlockable exit I might very well have climbed out of the bedroom window or opened an emergency exit. No doubt the latter would have set off the hotels fire alarm… now THAT would have been a story…

This photo is of the vineyards at Quinta do Portal in the Douro region of Portugal. As many wine estates do I this part of the world they maintain a very nice hotel in which we had the pleasure of staying.
