Wine Tanks at Occhipinti Sicily

By In Photographs, Visiting Sicily
Am I obsessed with wine tanks? Stainless steel, concrete… I see them on every winery visit and bitch and moan about them… but I seem to take a photo at each and every winery regardless. There is something about them, pictorially, that appeals. There is the repetition, the leading lines, how the light on stainless steel bounces and divides making patterns and kaleidoscopic colours. Add water on the floor, cleanliness is essential in every good winery, and the gleam plus the added reflections just add to the wonder. Anyone like a calendar featuring nothing but wine tanks? Perhaps just me then…

Here is another example – just one set of tanks at Occhipinti in Sicily. Again I think its the uniformity and repetition that appeals. That and knowing that held in each one are liquid joy waiting for the right moment to be released. But the repetition is broken by the red pipes adding, like ladders and mops and buckets, wine tasting equipment and other detritus a real sense of a working environment. They might not have the mystic of an oak barrel but they are of equal importance.
