Scanning the list of grapes on the Wine Century Club sheet it would seem a few gaps exist. The Wine Century Club lists 100 grape varieties to taste either in a blended wine or as a single varietal bottling; it isn't so much the certificate you receive at the completion of the task that appealed more to see if I had actually completed the task here on Spittoon. I'm sure all but a couple of the grape varieties have stained my lips at one point or another, a different proposition in seeing them listed on Spittoon.
A great many wines do not make it for one reason or another to this website but I wanted to ensure the results were traceable; it is here that the gaps emerge.
The list below begins with the Wine Century Club's list, followed by other varieties that have been tasted. Each includes a link to a relevant wine here on Spittoon with the plan to up-date as the archives are trawled. Many, it is notied, could do with a revisit and a new tasting note.
The list actually numbers 186 varieties - ignoring the various odd-ball American hybrid varieties that are unlikely to be available in the UK, but including the additional varieties I might just have made the grade...

Petit Manseng has the wine you've already claimed Gros Manseng against.

The list(s) raises some interesting issues - for example Auxerrois is also known as Cot or Malbec in France - especially in Cahors, South West France.
There are also other Muscats - e.g. Muscat a petit grains (small berries).
There are other Grenache variations - e.g. Grenache Gris (grey)
And how about Arrufiac, a grape that is used in south west France for white wines?
And some would argue that Primitivo and Zinfandel are not the same thing.

Petit Manseng and Gros Manseng are different varietals, and both are used in Jurancon AC and Pacherenc du Vic Bilh AC in South West France. The best and most elegant dessert wines from these appellations are made from the Petit Manseng, whereas dry and medium white wines use more of the Gros Manseng.

Hi Andrew,
It's really great how you've linked your entire list to wines you've reviewed. It's also an honor to have you in the club - welcome aboard!
A few notes:
There are lots (and lots) of grape variety synonyms - here are a few I notice given a quick look:
Mazuelo is Carignan
Carel.lo is Xarel-Lo
Malvasia Bianco is usually referred to as just Malvasia (by me)
Pinot Meunier we have as just Meunier but that like much in the grape world is debatable.
Also, it's very interesting how the gaps in your list reflect your preference for the obscure. Notable omissions include Gamay, Dolcetto, Palomino and Melon de Bourgogne which I have little doubt you've all had many times but they just haven't been reviewed on your site.
Obviously you're Century Club material!
Cheers,
Steve

You are so right Steve, I really should have checked more of the varieties to ensure the synonym issue didnt arise.
While you are correct on most I must take issue with Malvasia for there are several sub-varieties - Malvasia Bera, Malvasia di Candida, Malvasia Rei to mention but three.

I can't really argue with you on Malvasia - there are several sub-varieties - however, the sub-variety Malvasia Bianca is often referred to as just Malvasia. Technically you're right, it should always be referred to as Malvasia Bianca just as Muscat Blanc isn't properly shortened to just Muscat.
It's funny how there seems to be a pecking order here:
1(top). Muscat - almost always referred to by its sub-variety. Muscat Blanc (a Petits Grains), Muscat Ottenel, Muscat of Alexandria, etc.
2. Malvasia - sometimes referred to by its sub-variety
3. Trebbiano and Lambrusco - rarely referred to by its sub-variety
There are also issues where people passionately believe Brunello to be a variety distinctive from Sangiovese. It gets very complicated in Italy. . .
