(Muvedre must be Mourvèdre ala Monastrell!)The conditions around Alicante on Spain’s Mediterranean coast are ideal for producing hearty high alcohol wines. ‘Traditional’ styled wines can be light in colour and too dry, even rusty in flavour but this is the complete opposite – full, quite rich and yes with a high alcohol content (14%) but plenty of fruit, nicely balanced with a spirity edge to the aroma. Flavours of deep ripe black fruits have an element of earthiness to them. The spirity edge comes through on the red fruit finish. Very enjoyable. Washed down a late night snack of Manchego cheese and crusty bread very nicely.

I was very glad I overcame my huge prejudice of a "Benidorm red" to enjoy this, as you did with machego. Sadly, down here it costs about A$20 - about 8 pounds which is bloody annoying. And yes, I really did once go on a package holiday to Benidorm.

Tried this recently too. I agree. It's a good solid wine with a bit of additional interest.
